50th Year of Ministry

Georgalyn Wilkinson

We’re Celebrating Her 50th Year of Ministry!

Warmest greetings for the New Year. My name is Bob Phillips, and I serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gospel Literature International (GLINT). It is my privilege and pleasure to write to you about a person who is very special to all of us – our GLINT president, Georgalyn Wilkinson.

First, let me say a big "Thank you!" to you, Georgalyn, for your commitment to the ministry of GLINT. God has truly used your prayers and faithful support to have a worldwide impact for the gospel!

Forty-eight years ago, God led a remarkable woman, Henrietta Mears, to begin the ministry of GLINT. Through the years God has enabled GLINT to stay faithful to Henrietta’s vision – to get quality gospel literature into the "heart languages" of people around the world. And one of the servants God has used for 23 years at GLINT is Georgalyn Wilkinson. What a privilege it is for those of us involved with GLINT to have Georgalyn provide leadership for our ministry during this time.

When Georgalyn came to GLINT, she already had served in ministry leadership as a missionary and executive with Far East Broadcasting Company (FEBC). Georgalyn and her husband, David, began their service with FEBC in Okinawa in 1959 – 50 years ago! In 1963, they were transferred to Tokyo. Then, in 1971, while engaged in a special project in Korea, David died suddenly. Georgalyn found herself a widow with two young daughters. But, relying upon the Lord, she responded to FEBC’s challenge to continue to lead the ministry in Japan, which she did until 1979. Coming back to the United States at that time, Georgalyn served as FEBC Director of Outreach through 1985.

Then, again following the leading of the Lord, Georgalyn became president of GLINT in 1986. She has served her Lord through GLINT since that time. During those years, Georgalyn has "shepherded" the publication of over 3,000 quality Christian books into over 70 "heart languages"! How many people have been impacted through this ministry, only the Lord knows.

I have much I could say about Georgalyn. But I wanted you to hear what some others have said about her.

Dr. John Haggai, Founder of the Haggai Institute says --

When I think of Americans involved in missions, Dr. Georgalyn Wilkinson ranks right up at the top of my "Who’s Who" list. Dr. Bob Pierce, Founder of World Vision, told me about this remarkable lady before I ever met her. I met her in Tokyo in the early ‘70s just after the Lord had taken her husband, David, to Himself. Her keenness of mind, inner beauty as well as outward attractiveness, clarity of personal purpose, passion to carry out the Lord’s Great Commission, her skill in always directing conversation to others and away from herself – these were some of the immediate observations I had made, which created for me a profound respect and appreciation for this lady.

It’s difficult for me to believe that one who appears as youthful as she could now be celebrating fifty years in ministry. In addition to her personal plusses and ingenious humor, I consider her one of contemporary Christianity’s premier communicators in both spoken and written word.

Ray (deceased) and Ann Ortlund have been Georgalyn’s friends for many years. Ann writes --

I remember your face when I first saw you as you opened the door to Ray and me in Japan. And a thousand times since, with all your beauty and love. Thank you for your empathetic heart and all the faithfulness of your service, never complaining about pain. Jesus is coming soon, and His reward is with Him (Rev. 22:12)! I love you.

Over her years with GLINT, Georgalyn has had a special burden for Christian leaders who continue to proclaim the gospel while their very lives are in danger. One such "hero of the faith" is Nabil Costa from Lebanon, who gives leadership to outreaches among Arabic-speaking people.

It is both easy and difficult to talk about such an amazing Spirit-filled friend as Georgalyn. Easy because of her many God-given attributes, and difficult because you want to be sure that the words you choose give Georgalyn her due right.

Georgalyn reminds me of Barnabas – the encourager! I’ve seen the way the Lord uses her to touch lives. She is a very dear sister to me -- a prayer warrior, cheerleader and a true, caring and reliable friend and partner. Her love for the Lord and her energy and zeal for His work is contagious. She is a tower of strength in times of difficulty, and a wonderful companion with her wisdom and warm personality. I pray that the Lord may continue to bless her and use her to touch the lives of others."

Another national Christian publisher, Piotr Waclawik from Eastern Europe, writes:

Georgalyn has an exceptional commitment to Christ that is hard to find. She is a tremendous blessing to international publishers around the world because of how she allows God to use her to bless and encourage others.

One of my memorable experiences is 18 years ago when I attended the Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany for the first time. I did not know any U.S. Christian publishers. Georgalyn was the first person who invited me to her booth and spent A LOT OF TIME with me, sharing her vision and presenting books. Just imagine how she was perfectly patient with me since I didn't speak English at all.

Over the years, when we meet at book conventions around the world she always brings her special heart-gifts for me and my family. Her heart is always and totally focused on building the Lord's Kingdom first. I am very thankful to God for allowing me to meet Georgalyn at the very beginning of my publishing ministry. I am really honored she calls me her friend.

Georgalyn has had a significant impact on many ministries. For example, for a number of years she served on the board of directors for the Christian Management Association, led at that time by her long-time friend, Sylvia Nash. Sylvia writes:

When I think of Georgalyn, I think of a woman of faith, a woman of missions, a woman passionate about the gospel; a woman of integrity; a faithful friend, a compassionate employer; a gifted speaker; a prayer warrior; a talented writer; committed to relationships and relationally elegant; a courageous woman; a creative woman; intuitively aware; persistent; a devoted and loving mother and mother-in-love, a doting and proud grandmother; showing sustained enthusiastic action with unflagging vitality; and generous to a fault.

Congratulations, Georgalyn. You have been a loyal and faithful woman to the calling the Lord gave you many years ago.

Finally, I wanted you to hear from two people who are very special to Georgalyn – her daughters Barra and Janel. Barra writes,

Looking back at 46 years of being Georgalyn's daughter I can sum up her effect on God's Kingdom in one word: Steadfast. Webster defines it as: fixed in direction; steadily directed; firm in purpose, resolution, faith and attachment; unwavering; firmly established.

From staying in Japan to continue God's plan after my father died, to taking over the leadership of GLINT, she has exemplified steadfastness. She has never lost her purpose or goal whether it be the ministry, motherhood, or friendships. Anyone who has come across her path can definitely attest to that.

And Janel says,

One of my earliest memories of my mother is that of her beaming face as she excitedly told my sister and me stories of her day at "work". Night after night she would come home full of tales of what the Lord had done in her life, in her office, in the life of someone she met or talked with that day. I grew up fully convinced that nothing could be more exciting than being fully involved in God’s ministry.

Mom lived that out every day of her life. Her intimate faith and relationship with Jesus could not be contained and confined, but would spill out, bubbling over joyfully at any given moment, anywhere, and with anyone. Even during those inevitable and painfully difficult moments in ministry, she somehow held on to the deep-seated knowledge that "joy comes in the morning". And, indeed it always came.

Working for her Lord never ceased to fill her with a defined purpose, excitement and joy. From my earliest memory to this very moment, she has and will continue to inspire and instill in me, and undoubtedly countless others around the world, an excited eagerness to follow and serve the Master. This is the greatest gift she ever gave me!

If you know Georgalyn at all, I am sure you could add similar comments.

Without your faithful support of GLINT through your prayers and financial gifts, even such a wonderful servant as Georgalyn would not be able to be effective. It takes all of us serving together to bring the life-changing message of the gospel to those around the world who so desperately need to know of our Savior’s love and forgiveness.

Would you celebrate this month by making a gift to the work of GLINT in honor of Georgalyn’s 50 years in missions? It would truly be a special way to honor Georgalyn’s 50 years in ministry.

Let me say again -- thanks so much for all you mean not only to Georgalyn but to all of us at GLINT.

Gratefully in Christ,

Robert (Bob) Phillips

Chairman of the Board of Directors

Gospel Literature International (GLINT)

P.S. Georgalyn would love hearing from you during this special celebration time.
